Friends vs. Associates

Know the Difference
Knowing the difference could potentially save you some time and heartache. A true friend is a person that is there for you no matter what. They are dependable, trustworthy, honest and the list continues. You can always tell your friends apart from others because they are around throughout your times of hardship and mishap along with the happiest times of your life. They are ride or die. I'm sure that we've all heard the old school song entitled, "Friends." If not, care to listen?
This song is so true... My sentiments exactly!
Its so hard to find true friends nowadays. People are so much interested in what they can get out of you. I have been used by so many so called "friends" to the point where its kinda hard to trust some people. I try my hardest not to use the term "friend" so casually, but I always fail in doing so. Everyone whom I call my friend is truly not my friend. If I've never discussed or introduced you to my family or my husband, asked you for advise on personal issues, or cried on your shoulder...then you aren't my friend. You are most likely an associate. Sometimes I feel like I'm a better friend to some people than they are to me. I honestly believe that friends shouldn't be so critical or judgmental about others. They are understanding and supportive throughout your many endeavors and they don't try to force their beliefs on you. Friends never compare themselves to you or somehow try to outwardly compete with you for success, but associates do. It's very easy to confuse an associate with a friend because they are people whom we know and whom we talk to quite frequently. You may laugh and go out with them, but they aren't true companions. Associates can be described best as wishy washy. An elder once told me that true friends can be compared to the roots of a tree. The roots of a tree are essential for the tree's survival. The leaves, on the other hand, are like associates. They come and go as they please. They get what they want and they leave. They are like accessories. You don't need them in your life, but you want them. With associates, you don't tell them much about your personal life or about things that are of stress to you. You can tell your friend any and everything without any doubts or concerns that they will share your secrets. Real friends will always be there to give you advice and make time for you when you need them. Associates could care less about your problems and will always have an excuse for not being there for you. Also, a friendship should never be one sided. Each friend should be able to offer something in return to the other. It should never be one side constantly giving and giving and giving. So..... A word to the wise, don't be so quick to call everyone your friend, and know who your friends and associates are. Don't confuse the two.

Pessimistic People

Being around negative pessimistic people can really bring you down. I'm a happy go lucky person and I like surrounding myself around people who have an optimistic mindset about life. I'm disgusted by people who complain about everything and who are skeptical about other people's ideas and thoughts. How can you honestly say that you see the true beauty of the world if you're closed minded and value only your beliefs. I hate to say this, but I often find myself being around alot of pessimistic individuals, most of whom are my age or younger. The older people that I associate with are so much more content and assured about life. It's no surprise that most of my friends are older secure adults who are somewhat settled with life. My only wish is that people would value what they have in their lives and look at life in a higher perspective. These are my favorite quotes:
"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."  Winston Churchill
"A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort." Herm Albright
"Optimists are right. So are pessimists. It's up to you to choose which you will be." Harvey Mackay
